I can't weigh in on Gores' Kearny projects but CASES sounds good.

*************** Since it's patched together out of several stories, there are a lot of mini-conclusions, and that can be annoying or entertaining. I liked it. There's a strange mix in CASES that I found appealing. The young kid is fairly optimistic, but it is an ugly damned world, and it just keeps getting worse. Gores has got a lot going for him in the book. He's got an interesting style. He'll be coming across lean and mean like Hammett and then roll out some smooth Chandler imagery. He's got a good sense of timing, he can make his characters develop as well as progress, and he is a master storyteller.

I wanna read Deadman now.
