Mark asked if Stephen Hunter's book, Now Playing at the
Valencia, included his articles on samurai films. Just by
chance, I picked up this book at the library on Friday and
yesterday read part of the chapter titled Crime and Suspense
that included the section referred to earlier about film
noir. I loved the first sentence - For connoisseurs of this
paradox, here's a good one: The best film noir of the past
decade doesn't even know it's a film noir. He's referring to
L.A. Confidential.
In addition to Crime and Suspense, Hunter has chapters on
Westerns, War, Costumes!, Yuks, Monsters and Sci-fi, Toons
and one titled A Last Visit to the Valencia. He does mention
several samurai films, but I haven't read that section
yet.
