In that case, it sounds like the earlier volume, Violent Screen, was more slanted towards crime films. Its sections were (each of which includes five or six individual reviews followed, in most cases, by an essay): Film Noir, The Outlaw Life, Sexual Obsession, "True" Criminals, Horror, Wise Guys, Cops-R-Us, Action-Adventure, The Wild, Wild West, The Future, War, Race in America, Domestic Violence, No Exit and Late Developments.
