In fact the idea, IMO is coming from a novel by Jonathan Latimer, never
short of a good idea and irony. One of the novels of the Bill Crane
series, where a dog drinks as much as the bunch of anti-prohibition activist
he pictures as heroes in the series.
More passive: Kat Colorado owns a cat, in the series by Karen Kijewski about
this female PI who evolves quite often in the HB territories.
Marlowe's cat in the film TLG, is a tribute to Chandler, a real cat lover
who owed at least two consecutive feline companions (he spoke often about
them in his Letters)
