Is this the one where there's a bit where a suspect shoots a gun into a
wall (or through a window, or something like that) so the cops can
compare the bullet? Or was that Cty Primeval? Anyway, those two were
the first Leonards I read. Then went forward and backward as I found
other crime books by him. And I agree with you that there's something
very special about his Detroit novels.
