Re: RARA-AVIS: Lawrence Block on Late Late Show

About 20 years ago I met Lawrence Block when he toured the country giving seminars on writing. He is much changed, but then who isn't after all these years. He seemed considerably more formidable then but the circumstances were very different as he was selling his expertise at a good rate. Primary benefit of the seminar was pinpointing demons that hold one back.
After the close of the seminar (a couple of days) he and many of us went to a book store where a group of writers gave an informal talk and answered questions from the audience. One of the questions was about "writer's block," and he insisted that he had never encountered the problem. Last night he confessed that he had a down period when he could not write, and joked that he considered a life of crime since he had no experience at any job other than writing. He came out of the slump with the first Burglar book. I find it odd that he can talk about the bad period now but would not then, although it must have been a number of years before the seminar series.
