*************** Thanks for stirring my memory, Mark. For some
reason the two Chandlers I have read have been morphed in my
mind into a very unfunny, brooding, saturnine stew. I've had
similar troubles with other books. A while back when Bill
Crider mentioned that Faulkner's SANCTUARY had some hilarious
parts in it, I couldn't remember anything funny about it
until he brought up the funeral scene. My only explanation is
that an overall dark and depressing atmosphere must cloud the
humor for me.
