RARA-AVIS: Re: Woody Haut

I've read both PULP CULTURE and NEON NOIR, and while I was impressed with some of it, on the whole I wasn't convinced. On the whole I thought Haut focused too much on what he thought writers *should* be writing, instead of what they were writing. This is all in my opinion, but I felt that he elevated secondary novels that illustrated his point while ignoring or even trashing better novels that didn't. Specifically, he mentioned that Howard Browne in THE TASTE OF ASHES was content to focus on personal crimes instead of "state crimes" (i.e. racism, sexism, etc.).

On the other had he raises a number of good points. In particular, his chapter on women hardboiled writers in PULP CULTURE is excellent.
