Nice summarized. This (plus fedora) is what everyone thinks
of when I mention hardboiled fiction to them. There's a vague
notion of Hammett, and maybe they saw THE MALTESE FALCON, but
they know Chandler's wisecracking PI, by osmosis if not by
actual reading or viewing.
