In the cannibilized stories, Chandler sometimes uses an LA County Sheriff's Homicide Lieutenant named
"Violets" M'Gee as the hero's police contact. In the expanded versions, Ohls sometimes plays the part that M'Gee played in the short story versions. In the
"official" canon of Marlowe novels and short stories, M'Gee is an off-stage character only, referred to but never seen in THE LADY IN THE LAKE. In the short story version, carrying the same title, M'Gee has a fairly lengthy scene at the beginning.
