i haven't seen this, but godard's _alphaville_ (65 i think) is a really interesting transformation of the hardboiled detective story.

this is the only film that german playwright bertolt brecht actually worked on in hollywood. unfortunately, that doesn't show through too much, as hollywood dominates the form. it is overtly political, taking place (if i remember correctly) in czechoslovokia (and germany). naturally, it's anti-hitler propoganda, but you can't blame brecht and lang, since many of their buddies were killed by the german government. beyond a few stray images, the film didn't stick in my mind too well.
