NORTH DALLAS FORTY by Pete Gent (one of my favorite
novels): the movie was good, but the novel was pretty amazing
and, as I think about it, seems to have a lot of hard-boiled
elements. It is a very dark read and the character Phil
Elliot seems to be as hard-boiled as any character from
Horace McCoy.
So is NORTH DALLAS FORTY a hard-boiled novel? If nothing
else, it has a helluva downer ending.
