Re: RARA-AVIS: air conditioned phone booths (whittington)

Date: 13 Mar 2000

Old style phone booths, a fully enclosed box with a door, that in the 40's and 50's were installed in drug stores, hotel lobbies, etc. had a small fan up toward the roof to help keep the caller cool. They were also called sweat boxes. The reference to the Girl Scout cookie is probably a pun in reference to the candle in the window in Dr. Zivago (sp).
