There are a couple of lists on the RA web site that you might
want to look at:

Some of those will be hard to come by, but for classic
hardboiled stuff
(up to 1960 or so), they make for good recommendations. There
are quite a few writers who've been doing good work since
then but I haven't pieced together a list of who's been
mentioned here. Don't miss James Ellroy's L.A. Quartet, even
though everything does end badly.
To start off, though, I'd say you should read everything you
can find by Hammett and Chandler, and work on from
there.
