RARA-AVIS: The Wandreis

DOUGLAS GREENE (dgreene@odu.edu)
Thu, 18 Mar 1999 09:48:35 EST Donald Wandrei was a follower of H. P. Lovecraft, and with August
Derleth founded Arkham House to preserve HPL's works. After Derleth
died, Wandrei got into a huge fight with his heirs, the results of
which still reverberate around the fantasy-fan community.

Fedogan & Bremer in Minneapolis has collected his science fiction
stories (COLOSSUS, 1989) and his fantasy and horror stories (DON'T
DREAM, 1997), and they have announced the forthcoming publication of
at least some of his pulp detective stories under the title, I think,
of I. V. FROST.

His brother Howard Wandrei wrote many pulp mysteries, including some
for SPICY DETECTIVE under the name Robert A. Garron -- three were
collected as SPICY DETECTIVE ENCORES NO. 3 (Winds of the World Press,
1987). Fedgan & Bremer published a collection of his detective work
under the title THE LAST PIN (1996), and his fantasy stories as TIME
BURIAL (1996).
