I'm not sure that they especially turn their backs on hardboiled - it
seems to me that they have turned their backs on a lot of mystery
writers, period. An interesting phenomenon has been the flourishing of
mysteries by female authors under romance imprints. Just the other day a
friend who deals in used books showed me a whole box of these he had
just gotten in. I had heard of none of the authors. He gave me "Alaska
Gray" (Worldwide Library) by Susan Froetschel as a present. One of these
days I'll read it, just to take a peek over the wall...It's time for
crossover, I guess.
