In my opinion, one of the best PI novels ever written.
Aside from THE MALTESE FALCON itself it's one of the
few times I've seen a totally objective,
"camera-tape-recorder" narrative style maintained through an
entire book, and the surprise ending is, as you say, really a
surprise.
