If you can stomach the bleakness of Simenon's romans durs, try Dirty Snow. The protagonist, Frank Friedmaier, is one of the more despicable characters you'll come across in literature. Still, Simenon leaves open the possibility of his redemption. Highly recommended. It's a real gift that NYRB is bringing these classic novels back into print.
