He's not Mike Hammer, or even Joe Friday, I grant you. But he's tough, competent, and colloquial (which is to say, he talks like a regular guy).
I'd be happy to go through a door with him (providing, of course, that I had jurisdiction in Texas, and he was a real person).
By the way, "Rara-Avian" is a proper noun, and, consequently, should be capitlized. As a recovering academic, you should know that.
