The terrific movie "Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang" does a nice job
making fun of these cliched conventions:
1) the two seemingly unconnected plot threads that intersect
2) the obligatory thugs beating up the detective as a warning
3) everything pointing to the guilty party, then a surprise
twist at the last second to point to someone else. 4) saving
the girl at the last second from death
There were more of these cliches that the movie pointed out,
although the bit of having the dog disappearing with the
severed finger might've been original.
