Amy wrote a few things, a couple of which I'll
highlight:
"But I have a soft spot for the underdog and seemingly have
an almost compulsive need to jump and defend him/her."
I find the notion of Quentin Tarantino as "underdog" these
days laugh-out-loud funny. No doubt he'd like to be.
And then:
"I'm quite naive and tend to see people through the cliched
rose-colored glasses so maybe I did expect a certain sense of
solidarity among those of us who enjoy noir, but not a
solidarity that is blind allegiance and complete agreement;
more like a sympathetic understanding of what noir creators
are trying to do."
Were you around for the Great Spillane Debate of 2006? How
about our extended symposium on the relative merits of
Altman's screen version (some say "adaptation," others
"terrific revision," and still others "base betrayal that
likely left Chandler spinning in his grave") of THE LONG
GOODBYE?
We can't even agree on any sort of comprehensive definition
of "hb/noir."
And that enthusiastic diversity of opinion is what makes this
list so enjoyable.
All the Best-
Brian
