Interesting that you should say so. Raymond Benson, who wrote nine Bond pastiches for the Fleming estate after John Gardner gave the gig up, has suggested that Bond is as tied to the Cold War era as Sherlock Holmes is to the Victorian era, and he would have liked to do his novels as historicals had the owners of the property allowed him to.
