RED HARVEST is often pointed to as a Marxist work, but it's really quite free of any political commentary.

********** This is my opinion, too. There is hardly any theme that can't be extrapolated into the political arena, but my feeling is that Hammett was, like Hemingway, mostly dealing in the personal. This was reinforced by his final novel, The Thin Man.
