Hi Jim-

Thanks for the kind words (and Karin, thanks both for the encouragement, and for answering my B'con survey!). I'm biased, and can't vouch for the quality of the story, but it was an awful lot of fun to write, and I was pleasantly surprised that they made it the lead-off story.

There are a couple of homages to directors Anthony Mann and Howard Hawks in the story. I had fun coming up with those as well, since Mann especially strikes me as the ultimate hard-boiled director (the stuff he did with Widmark and Stewart, especially), and Hawks was, well, Hawks.

Anyway, I just hope that if you read it, you enjoy it!

All the Best-

Brian

Hard-boiled westerns have been discussed here on a
number of occasions. You might all want to check out
the November 2006 issue of ALFRED HITCHCOCK which has
a western/mystery entitled "Counting Coup" by our own
  Brian Thornton.

Good on you, Brian! May you be Rara-Avis's next Spur
  winner!
