SE Hinton is a she, not a he. She was one of the, if not the,
biggest young adult authors in the late '60s and '70s. I've
never read her, but have seen three movies based on her work,
all starring a young Matt Dillon: Tex and two by Francis Ford
Coppola, Outsiders (along with Matt Dillon, a bunch of other
future stars, including Tom Cruise in a small role, but don't
hold that against it) and Rumblefish. I've been meaning to
check out the recent DVD reissue of The Outsiders: The
Complete Novel, which reinstates a lot of material the studio
forced Coppola to cut for time considerations. Anyway, if the
movie was faithful to the novel (and I've heard it was),
Outsider's about white guys in gangs
(which substitute for their screwed up families) and their
rumbles.
