Finished Rat City yesterday. I started it months ago but came
to the final hundred pages and just couldn't motivate myself
further. I finally decided to finish it up anyway. I can't
find anything good to say about it. Vapid and uninteresting.
A lot of the dialogue stuck out as ridiculous. And all this
in an overpriced trade paperback. On a 0 to 10, this gets a
1.
Also just finished Mieville's King Rat. It was pretty damned
bad, too. I had read his Perdido Street Station and I thought
it showed a lot of imagination and talent right up until the
end when, near as I can tell, he had no idea how to finish it
and it groaned to an unconvincing halt. King Rat read like a
poorly done comic book.
On a more positive note, I reread Cormac McCarthy's Blood
Meridian. Just as stunning the second time. Spectacular, with
a subtext to knock your socks off. Literature at its
best.
