For what it's worth:
Our own Bob Toomey used the phrase "hardboiled comedy"
(applied to Peter Rabe's MURDER ME FOR NICKELS) back in
January 2000 on this list. Mario Taboada also used the phrase
(applied to Richard S. Prather) in June 2000 on this
list.
There are other examples on the internet that predate these
uses, by the way (such as a Village Voice article from
1999).
