One of the World War II era novels features Bertha Cool solving a case on her own. Donald is off in the Navy, or something like that. I can't recall the title of the book right now. I read the first book in the series, THE BIGGER THEY COME, just last week and enjoyed it a lot.

I also just finished Stansberry's THE CONFESSION and thought it was very good, too. (Although just about as different from Erle Stanley Gardner as you're likely to find.)
