Rex McBride and Adams's other detective characters always
struck me as sort of the transitional figures connecting Race
Williams to Mike Hammer.
In fact, McBride's comments to a cop in UP JUMPED THE DEVIL
about how an "American Gestapo" is needed to deal with Nazi
spies seems so similar to comments Hammer makes to Pat
Chambers about dealing with commie spies in ONE LONELY NIGHT,
that I wouldn't be surprised to learn that Spillane (who's
already admitted to being a Daly fan) was also an Adams
fan.
