Thanks, Mario. You made the connections between a lot of the
things spinning around in my head that I just couldn't pull
together. Again, it's the idea of hopelessness, of the
situation and/or the character. Sometimes that doom is in the
form of classic tragedy's fatal flaw, sometimes it's imposed
on a more (though seldom or never completely) innocent
character, but it is always hanging overhead, whether the sun
is shining or not.
