This describes a lot of the difference for me, too, the idea
of hope and the possibility of its realization. A favorite
quote of mine comes from the (un-noir) movie Clockwise: "It's
not the despair, Laura. I can stand the despair. It's the
hope." There may be hope in noir, but it ain't going to be
realized.
