I'm half way through Joe Lansdale's Freezer Burn which you may want to check out re: Southern Gothic, miker. This one has strong echoes of Tod Browning's classic movie Freaks and Gresham's Nightmare Alley. Lansdale seems to be mining territory where noir & Southern Gothic (& the western, horror & other genres) overlap.
