I'm half way through Joe Lansdale's Freezer Burn which you
may want to check out re: Southern Gothic, miker. This one
has strong echoes of Tod Browning's classic movie Freaks and
Gresham's Nightmare Alley. Lansdale seems to be mining
territory where noir & Southern Gothic (& the
western, horror & other genres) overlap.
