********* I was suprised to see that Out of the Past is a San Francisco movie. That's the movie version of BUILD MY GALLOWS HIGH, if my memory is correct. The novel starts in a small town close to the Tolumne Pass in northern Yosemite in California, and then moves to Reno, and then to New York. I don't remember any San Francisco scenes.
