Consider that this was before heterosexuality and homosexuality had been invented... But Achilles does indeed have real flaws: he goes into uncontrolled wrath easily, he is stubborn, he is a bad judge of people, he is ready to blame others, and so on. The Greek gods were lenient with male heroes as long as they were brave. Apollo came down to stop the fight between Hector and Ajax and conveyed Zeus's approval to both of them. The only virtuous hero (in the modern Hollywood sense) is Patroclus, who however does not get top billing from Homer.
