I'm surprised that no one has mentioned Twain's PUDD'NHEAD WILSON, possibly the first inverted detective story and the first mystery in which the detective uses forensic science to solve the crime
(prefiguring R. Austin Freeman by several decades), and possibly the first courtroom thriller (nearly a century before Erle Stanley Gardner's Perry Mason).
