Erick, Check out "Case of the Vanishing Beauty" and "Darling, It's Death". Those are pretty straight-forward detective stories without the satire and camp of the later Prather books. Although, Prather made a great jab against Travis McGee in "The Cheim Manuscript", if I'm not mistaken, where Shell nails a guy named Burper McGee who's got a real bad stomach and burps all the time (that's what gives him away to Shell just before Shell blasts him).
