I can't find the right file at the moment, but I recall Cap
Shaw having been quoted as saying that hard-boiled fiction
was written "by men for men" or something like that. He also
bragged that his stable of writers consisted of "six footers"
and apparently Carroll John Daly had him convinced (through
the mail) that he was, indeed, over six feet, although he was
only five-something.
