I would like to see a Kurosawa version, with Japanese actors
and locale. It will never happen, but it's an entertaining
notion. This director had a way of cutting down on the
dialogue and making transitions abrupt, an ideal style for
hardboiled (well, he *was* one of the great hardboiled
creators).
For an American version, I would choose Harry Dean Stanton to
play Spade. Stanton has a sleazy air that seems much more
appropriate to a PI than Bogart. Bogart was too classy.
