It occurs to me that the current practice of providing
private eyes with background stories (continuing girlfriends,
pals, dogs, cats, references to home life, chronological
progression of series, etc.) may have begun with Roger L.
Simon's Moses Wine series. "The Big Fix" came out in '73.
Anybody think of any earlier examples?
