Hi again Neil,
Kemm Nunn wrote a coming of age, new age, surfer land, story with a charismatic cult leader bad guy, and a lot of young adult angst. It's stronger early than late but overall is a good read and worth your time. Nevertheless, you won't confuse it with Pelecanos or anyone else from HB land.
