I'm not sure whether CASINO ROYALE is hardboiled or just
brutal, but it certainly impressed me. It's been more than 35
years since I read it, but I still recall the scene where
Bond is sitting naked in a bottomless chair and the villain
is wielding a carpet beater on a delicate portion of his
anatomy. And I still remember what I thought was a great
hardboiled line near the end of the torture scene where the
villain says, "Say goodbye to it, Bond."
