That NYT review of Nightmare Town, I agree, was awful. And I
think it's because you have a reviewer who had already
dismissed Hammett as an author before even coming to this
collection. What was that line about H's continually sagging
rep that wasn't going to be boosted by this collection? I
wasn't aware Hammett's influence was waning. If anything, I
have always found him more interesting than Chandler, and
thought his literary stock was being re-appreciated. So the
reviewer is telling us what he would like to happen (Hammett
go bye-bye) in spite of the reality, which is opposite.
Who'll they get to review that Library of America novel
collection?
