I just read the review of the Hammett anthology in the New
York Times Book review, and I'm steamed. The reviewer says
things like, "Hammett is more written about than read," and
"Nightmare Town" . . . . is unlikely to reverse his sagging
literary fortunes," and "the tough-guy prose that once seemd
hard-boiled to awestruck readers of Black Mask magazine now
seems flappy and stilted, especially by comparison with later
crime novelists like Raymond Chandler and James M.
Cain."
Maybe it's just me but every word I've quoted seems
incredibly wrong-headed.
Not to mention stupid.
