I think Pronzini's got a pretty good claim to the title of
being the best PI short story writer currently practicing.
Certainly *Casefile* and *Spadework* are two of the best
single-author PI collections to be published in the last two
decades.
Another point should be made is his amazing ability to
collaborate with so many other writers, from iconoclastic
science-fiction/fantasy specialists like Barry Malzberg to
political columnists like Jack Anderson to his significant
other, Marcia Muller. William DeAndrea once called him the
"mystery equivalent to blood type O." - Jim Doherty
