I first read Spillane when I was about 13, but it was one of his
children's books. I had no idea who he was, but when I did, it seemed
strange he'd done books for kids. I forget the title, but I think it
involved a couple of boys and a beach where the tide went very far out.
Perhaps there was pirate treasure.

I don't think I began to read a lot of hardboiled novels until I was 16 or
so. A TV station ran a series of old Warner Bros. movies and that got me
hooked.
