recommendation of my father. It was the one thing we kept in common
during the worst of my adolescent rebellion.

I loved Encyclopedia Brown. Plus Emil and the Detectives was the first
time I came up against the truism that the book is always better than
the movie, particularly when it came to live-action Disney.

In high school, I read all of Bond and a few Spillanes, but it was
reading Chandler during my first year at college that hooked me on
hardboiled. Of course, I was already predisposed to PIs, thanks to
Mannix.
