"The hardest place, though, was... (envelope please) New
Haven, CT.
Someone should set a crime novel there. The week I arrived
one of the
high level New England wise guys was found in the river with
lead in the
back of his head; I personally knew people who were shot at,
pistol
whipped, knifed, and worse. One friend was robbed at knife
point at the
back entrance of a funeral home while a wake was going
on."
I have visited New Haven a few times, and it's always been
scary. But
the scariest place ever was South Bend, Indiana, where I once
stopped
at a corner grocery store while traveling across the country
with my
wife, who was very pregnant. Both the store and the parking
lot
contained types the likes of which I hadn't seen even in L.A.
Nothing
happened, but Werner Herzog or Roman Polanski should have
been there,
with camera.

MT
