I think Adam Hall's Quiller series was a really excellent set of
books. I don't know if others on the list would consider them
hardboiled, but I sure do. Some of the better ones, like IMHO _The
Tango Briefing_ were both tough and chilling, yet at the same time
had the sense of the value of engaging in the struggle, even in a
morally compromised environment.

Quiller also adheres to a code. He tends to hear it calling at times
when it is wildly inconvenient. I get the feeling Hall spent a lot of
time thinking of the likes of Chandler when he put the concept for
the series together.
