He also writes short stories. I once stumbled across one of
them in one
of those fine Southern magazines that publishes short fiction
(I can't
recall the title). This was not a crime story but shared his
very
personal existentialist themes and style. Sallis is indeed a
wonderful
author, but new readers should know that his stories are
rather bleak
rides and that there isn's much emphasis on solving the crime
or on
detecting. As the clich=E9 goes, "he transcends the
genre".
I would suggest including something by him on the reading
list. His
novels are available in paperback and are well
distributed.
