That's my question as well. What do you mean by "live it." Why do you
automatically assume that other's here just read it. I'm not trying to
pick a fight. I'm genuinely curious.

I've only talked to Ellroy once for an hour or so, but from that
experience, plus reading _My Dark Places_, it's pretty clear that he's
writing from life experience.
